Today's shorts are of 3 fig varieties that are severely underrated in my opinion.
They don't have fancy names or high prices, but I guarantee you they're way better than most people think.
Many years ago a fig variety called Smith was one I was ranting and raving about before anyone gave a crap. Just look at the name. It's far from the highly marketable "Fignomenal." Which by the way is just a Hardy Chicago with closer node spacing.
Once growers caught on they realized that Smith actually deserved more attention and the prices rose. For years a nursery called Becnel sold Smith to homeowners all over the South. They were the ones to introduce it and did the hard work of sharing this amazing fig variety.
Because it was at one point very common in the South, a few opinionated fig growers from the South got upset. It's driving the price of Smith higher, they spat and complained.
What was I supposed to do? Leave everyone in the dark about it? Many years later it's one of the best fig varieties pretty much anywhere. Not just the South. It's not one of those pump-and-dump fig varieties. As I mentioned in a short over the weekend, Ponte Tresa was at one point $1,000. 2 years later I bought one for $22.
Figs like these deserve more attention and praise. Certainly a lot more than the next new "hype" fig. I've got a great idea for collectors. Why not trial what already exists before falling for the latest Ouriola, Labritja, Figo Roxo, or Montanha Verde? These are all likely another name for Hivernenca by the way, which has slowly accumulated 10 or more additional names in the last 3 years.
White Triana
Sultane
Sefrawi
Da Ponte
Florea
Little Ruby
Celeste
Rosa Esmeralda
Salce
Demos Unk
Teramo
Ponte Tresa
Pastiliere
White Marseilles
Barbillone
Brianzolo Rosso
All of these and more deserve much more study. Which fig variety do you think is underrated?
